Ways You Can Earn Contact Hours and Recertification Credits

Whether you need to earn continuing nursing education (CNE) contact hours or other credits for recertification, you have many excellent options. To make it as easy as possible for you, the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB)  compiled a list of 10 methods to earn credits in a way that fits you best. Credit Activities

Credit is awarded for the following:

  1. Courses, Workshops, Independent Study

    Courses and workshops - includes the AMSN Annual Convention and other AMSN education events.

    Independent study:

  2. Preceptorship/Mentoring

    Supervising baccalaureate, masters, or doctoral degree students and newly-hired nurses in educational and professional settings.

  3. Academic Courses

    Enrollment in baccalaureate, masters, or doctoral degree programs related to medical-surgical nursing.

  4. Presentation

    Presenting new content for academic courses and CNE programs.

  5. Test Development and Item Writing

    Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurses (CMSRN®) serving on the MSNCB Test Development/Item Writer Committee.

  6. Professional Publications

    Writing a manuscript, research paper, book, or book chapter. Material must be published by a recognized publisher or professional journal.

  7. Multimedia Program Development

    Developing program content or scripts for videotapes, audiotapes, and other electronic media.

  8. Conference Poster Presentation

    Presenting a poster relevant to medical-surgical nursing at a regional or national meeting.

  9. Membership on a National Nursing Organization Board or National Committee Chair

    Serving on a nursing board or chairing a national committee.

  10. Research/Evidence-Based Practice Projects

    Projects that have gone through the IRB process at your facility. (Credits for primary investigator only.)
