Dear MSNCB Board of Directors,

I am writing on behalf of Parkview Medical Center in Pueblo, CO. We would like to share our CMSRN success story with you.

Parkview is a nonprofit, 350-bed, level 2 trauma center. We proudly serve not only the community of Pueblo County, but also the outlying rural communities in southern Colorado.

We have three medical-surgical floors in our facility. In July of 2015, I met with my three nurse managers and we agreed that we wanted to empower our nursing staff to recognize that the work they do every day on the med-surg units is a specialty in its own right. We also wanted the nurses to have an increased sense of pride in their work.

After the meeting, we set a goal to have 5% of our eligible nurses (about three per unit) become certified as CMSRNs within a year. However, after getting the word out, we didn’t have much luck convincing our nurses to take the test.

Around the same time, we asked one of our med-surg staff nurses, Amelia Vigil, RN, BSN, CMSRN, who happened to be our only CMSRN on staff, to attend the 2015 AMSN Convention in Las Vegas, NV, on behalf of Parkview and bring back any valuable information she could gather.

When Amelia returned, she told us about the MSNCB FailSafe Certification Program. Amelia was aware that her peers wanted to take the test, but were hesitant to do so because there were upfront costs. While at the convention, she met several CMSRNs who had experienced great success with the FailSafe Program. They told her they thought the program would be a perfect fit for Parkview.

Upon hearing that FailSafe doesn’t require upfront fees, the Parkview nurses became excited about obtaining their CMSRN certifications and expressed relief that they wouldn’t have to worry about the financial burden. Our department purchased copies of the Core Curriculum for Medical-Surgical Nursing and the Medical-Surgical Nursing Review Questions to help the nurses prepare for the exam.

Cherise Lucas, BSN, RN, CMSRN, one of the Parkview nurses seeking certification, put it well:

“I like that there was no upfront cost, and that if you didn’t pass the first time, you didn’t have the financial burden or stress of paying additional fees for your test the second time. It made me excited to become a certified med-surg nurse! It was also exciting to see my peers get their certification and it really built on our team presence.”

From September 2015 to October 2016, Parkview proudly welcomed 24 CMSRN nurses, far exceeding our goal. We had such a great response, that we have signed an additional contract with Failsafe for the upcoming year with at least another 15 nurses expected to test!

This year has really made a mark for our med-surg nurses. Many of our nurses who have not yet taken the exam have plans to do so once they meet the eligibility criteria.

Earning their CMSRN certifications has increased the confidence of our nurses, both within our units and with the care we provide to our patients. There is now an enhanced appreciation that the arena of medical-surgical nursing truly is its own specialty practice.

By sharing our story, we hope others will take this opportunity to use the Failsafe Program and help advance medical-surgical specialty certification.

We are so proud of our nurses for this huge accomplishment and we are looking forward to certifying even more CMSRNs.

Sincerely,

Maggie Welte, BSN, RN, ONC
