CMSRN Testing During COVID-19 Restrictions

The following contains important information for your certification exam. Please read to the end.

For your safety and convenience, you can now take the CMSRN exam at home, provided you meet the computer requirements for a remote proctored exam. Please see below for instructions on how to schedule an exam taken at home.

Prometric has deemed the CMSRN certification an essential services program, and so you will be able to take the CMSRN exam at a limited number of test centers starting on May 1. Some scheduled testing appointments with Prometric may still be cancelled due to government-required social distancing policies. See below for what to do if Prometric has cancelled your exam scheduled for a date after April 30th.

Safety Practices at Test Centers

You will be required to bring and wear a mask to the test center. Both medical masks and cloth face coverings are acceptable.

To observe social distancing at six feet per the CDC guidelines, Prometric has limited the number of people allowed in a test center. This means you may have difficulty finding an available date or nearby location to take the exam at a test center. If you are unable to find a date or location that works for you, we encourage you to sign up for a remote proctored exam.

My testing window ends soon. How do I get an extended testing window?

If your testing window ended or ends between March 18 and June 16 and you do not have an exam scheduled after April 30th, you will be receiving an extended window through July 22nd  to take the exam. You do not need to contact us to request an extension. You will be able to take the exam at a test center or at home once you have an extension. MSNCB will contact you no later than May 18th to let you know your extension has been processed and you can schedule an exam.

If your testing window ends between May 1 and June 16 and you already have an exam scheduled after April 30th, you first need to cancel that scheduled exam. Go to your exam application, click Step 3: Exam Appointment Scheduling, and then scroll to the bottom and click Cancel CMSRN Exam. After you have canceled your exam, you should email msncb@msncb.org, state that you have canceled your exam and that you would like an extension. You will be able to take the exam at a test center or at home once you have an extension. MSNCB will contact you no later than May 18th to let you know your extension has been processed and you can schedule an exam.

Prometric cancelled my exam scheduled to take place after April 30. What do I do?

If you don’t want an extension, you can schedule another exam. If you use the Schedule – At Test Center or Schedule – Remote Proctored buttons and see an error message that says your eligibility ID has already been used, please try using the Reschedule options and use the confirmation number from your cancelled exam to reschedule.

If you do want an extension, please forward the cancellation email to msncb@msncb.org and request an extension.

Do I have to pay for an extension?

If you have an exam scheduled after April 30th and you do not take that exam, you may be required to pay the $75 fee to receive a new 90-day extension. This is the only time a fee will be required. If you are not sure if you have an exam scheduled after April 30th or not, please contact us at msncb@msncb.org to find out.

There will be no fee required for a testing window extension requested from test applicants affected by Prometric testing site closures between March 18 and April 30.

If I’m a FailSafe applicant, can I still get an extension?

FailSafe applicants are allowed to request a testing window extension if their test window or exam were affected by Prometric testing site closures between March 18 and April 30.

How can I schedule or reschedule an exam at a test center or at home?

If you have an exam scheduled at a test center and you want to reschedule to another date at a test center, go to your exam application, click Step 3: Exam Appointment Scheduling, and then click Reschedule CMSRN Exam Appointment At Test Center.

If you have an exam scheduled at home and you want to reschedule to another date at home, go to your exam application, click Step 3: Exam Appointment Scheduling, and then click Reschedule CMSRN Exam Appointment - Remote Proctored.

If you have an exam scheduled at a test center and you would prefer to take the exam at home, we first recommend that you confirm your computer meets the requirements for an at-home exam. If your computer does meet the requirements, then you should cancel your scheduled exam. Go to your exam application, click Step 3: Exam Appointment Scheduling, and then scroll to the bottom and click Cancel CMSRN Exam. After you have canceled your exam, you can click Schedule CMSRN Exam - Remote Proctored.

Can I keep my scheduled exam date?

If you have an exam scheduled at home or at a test center and you want to keep that exam date, you can keep it provided we do not hear of expanded closures from Prometric and you do not receive any communication from Prometric about your exam being cancelled. You should be monitoring your email account for any communication from Prometric or MSNCB; specifically, the email address you use to sign in to your AMSN/MSNCB accounts is the email address that Prometric will use to send you updates about your exam.

What are the requirements for taking a remote proctored exam? Do I have to take it at my house?

You should run the ProProctor system check on the device you will be using to take the exam to make sure you meet the requirements for a remote proctored exam.

You do not have to take the exam at your house. The requirements for the environment in which you take the exam include but are not limited to: the room must be an indoor room with four walls that is well-lit and free from background noise and disruptions. No one else may be present in the room in which you take the remote-proctored exam. If a third party enters the room during the exam, your exam will be terminated and/or your results invalidated.

Can I reschedule or cancel my exam? What happens if I miss my exam or don’t take an exam within my testing window?

There is no rescheduling fee, and you may reschedule and cancel your exam at any time through your extended window date. However, if you do not attend a scheduled exam, you may be charged a $75 extension fee to receive another extension.

If you are a FailSafe applicant and you miss an exam or do not take an exam within your extended testing window, that missed exam or missed testing window counts as one of your two attempts to take the exam and you will have to reapply for another exam. Your facility may be billed for the cost of an exam for any missed exam or missed testing window.

ID Policies

As usual, you will need to bring a government-issued photo ID that matches the name used on your exam application. If you are testing outside your country of citizenship, you will also be required to bring a valid passport. Prometric will allow government-issued IDs with expiration dates from Feb 1, 2020 and forward to be used as an acceptable ID for testing until governmental issuing entities resume operations.
